Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens

Annie Leibovitz is an American Photographer known for her work with Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, revolutionized photography and its standards of quality. I thought that the movie was very interesting and that it gave a very personal insight to the life of Leibovitz. I had seen her work a couple time before but I never knew that she photographed them. I learned how Leibovitz changed her artistic focus and was prominent in many different forms of photography. Leibovitz made friendships with many celebrities through her work. her work was very personal and many of her subjects said how they didn't notice her taken photos after a while. Specifically I had seen the cover of Vanity Fair that had Julia Roberts and George Clooney, the Green Issue.

Annie Leibovitz Work:
This photo by Leibovitz captures the Rolling Stones during one of their performances in Philadelphia (1975). I enjoyed this photo in particular because there is the main focus of Mick Jagger jumping mid air on the left but there is so much more going on in the photo with the band and the audience. On the right side of the photo you see the lights and everything is very bright, while the left side there is a clear contrast of Mick Jagger and the black background behind him.

Another photo by Leibovitz which was taken for Vogue magazine captures Kim Kardashian and Kanye West with their new born child in 2014. What I thought was interesting about this photo was the different expressions, especially their baby. The photo shows a more personal view to Kanye who is not known to be a very open person. I also think the contrast between Kanye and Kim is very clear. Kim is wearing a white dress with an obvious pose for the camera, while Kanye seems more relaxed shirtless in black pants not seeming to care as much about the photo.

These photos by Leibovitz are from the early years of her photography in her driving series and show photos of friends and family driving or in the car. I thought that the simplicity of the series while still showing something different in each one of the individual photos made the series interesting. The differences of the subjects are easy to distinguish because the environment of the photos are the same throughout the series.
