Backlit Photography

When looking at this photo which shows a rock formation in front of the sunset or sunrise creating a silhouette effect along with the reflection along the water's surface. To create the silhouette effect in this photo I think the meter reading was taken from sky so that you could see the different colors and being that the rock was not as bright as the sky it was darkened. If the image was metered on the rock formation you would be able to see the detail of the rocks and the sky would be brighter and the color change would be less noticeable.
